I’m trying this new writing exercise which I learned about from Julia Cameron’s website, called Morning Pages.
The concept is sitting down and writing out 3 longhand pages in order to – well dump your thoughts on the page. A head clean-out if you will. The method calls for longhand…which isn’t going to happen, as by half a page my weakling hand will be crying out in pain, but I am going to aim for 3 typed pages.
I tried this for the first time this morning and I have to say, it was not only challenging, but afterwards, I honestly do feel as if my head was a little clearer. It amounted to almost bang on 2000 words, and it went from tangent to tangent, from complaints to general what i’m doing, to thoughts on life and even reminiscing about problems with ex-girlfriends.
All in all, I think it was an interesting experience. I guess the whole point of the 3 pages as opposed to just the 1, is you’re pushing into pain territory. I think anyone can sit down and spam out a single page, but when you’re getting deep into the 2 pages mark, you really have to tap into that active consciousness and see what you can pull out of it. Hell, I almost started writing a blog post – but perhaps the fact I managed to dump out some head clutter allowed me to write THIS blog post.
Ever tried this process? Did it work for you? I’ll let you know how I get on.
* edit – It has just occurred to me, that by typing, I’ve gone completely overboard and written the equivalent of what…maybe 10 written pages?! I think I’m going to cut down to maybe 1.5-2 pages tops 🙂
